If you’re a family that likes to hang out together or with friends, the chances are a multi-use open-plan layout will suit you and your lifestyle perfectly. That said, furnishing and lighting such an interior needs some design know-how – and that’s where we come in! To inspire you, we’re paying a visit to this modern duplex apartment in the coastal city of Miami, the lower level of which blends a hallway and office, plus sitting and dining areas to create a large, bright and airy living space that brings people together.
Because it’s such a large space – and filled with so many clever styling ideas – we’re breaking it down into two parts. In this first instalment, we’re focusing on the double-height entrance and the more intimate dining area, beginning with the former…
We all know that first impressions count, of course, and this home’s entrance delivers on impact. A double-height space that offers glimpses of the upper and lower levels, it’s separated from the main living area by a partition wall against which is positioned our BOLOGNA console, new PALERMO mirror and NAPLES table, while a customised TAKI ceiling lamp adds sparkle to the central void. A showstopping space that still feels serene thanks to this focal point arrangement, it allows the owners to transition in and out of the home with ease and welcome guests with pride.
This home’s versatile open-plan layout also allowed the owners to unify the details, textures and finishes across the entire floor to achieve really impressive results. Notice how the colours (rich, relaxing neutrals), shapes (clean lines and curves) and materials (predominantly brass and veneer) found in the chic hallway have been purposefully carried through to the main living space, including the dining area – which is where we’re headed next.
Perfectly suited to casual family meals or larger get-togethers with friends, the central dining area is defined by a soft xxxxx rug, on top of which sits an AMMAN table with eight CARMEL chairs, both designs harmoniously customised in a palette of gentle grey, dark wood and brushed brass. Above, a ten-shade ZURICH ceiling lamp adds a note of drama while functional but fabulous pieces such as the SIENA sideboard and matching AMAVI console line the edges of the space, creating a symmetrical look that feels instantly elegant.
